Prehabilitation & Post-Surgery RehabilitationIn Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, & New York
Our MOTION therapists will guide you through your recovery process after surgery. We can also work with you to prepare for an upcoming surgery. This is known as prehabilitation.
Services that our therapists provide are not limited to exercises and pain-relieving modalities, they also offer education so you understand your healing progress and the sensations you may experience every step of the way. Understanding why you’re feeling what you’re feeling may reduce any anxiety that you’re not healing properly.
Benefits and Focus of Prehabilitation
Participating in a prehabilitation for surgery program can give you a sense of empowerment by deciding to take an active role in helping your recovery process.
The focus of prehab:
- Strengthening the body
- Improving flexibility and range of motion
- Increasing stamina
- Enhancing functional abilities
- Training using crutches, canes, or other assistive devices that may be needed after surgery
- Education on appropriate diet changes and/or smoking cessation
Studies have shown that the stronger and healthier you are before surgery the easier and less painful recovery will be. It may also lead to shorter hospital stays and fewer complications. Generally, it is advised to begin a prehabilitation program at least 6 weeks before orthopedic surgery.
Benefits and Focus of Rehabilitation After Surgery
Whether or not you participated in a prehabilitation program, our therapists will do their best to rehabilitate you back to your prior level of function, restore any function potentially lost because of surgery, and return you to the activities you love.
The main goals of therapy after surgery are managing pain and swelling; restoring range of motion, strength, and joint function to normal levels; minimizing scarring; and expediting recovery.
How we do this
A post-surgeryl rehabilitation program is different for everyone. It is uniquely tailored to your needs and preferences. Right after surgery, tissues can still be too inflamed and irritated to participate in active exercises. In this case, there are several passive pain-relieving modalities for our therapists to use. These include devices such as electric stimulation and laser light therapy. They apply these to damaged tissues to increase comfort and speed your healing.
Engaging in rehabilitation after surgery helps decrease pain and speed up healing. This happens by easing the flow of blood which distributes oxygen and healing nutrients to areas of the body that need it.
Finally, our main goal is to help return you to the activities you love without limitation.
