5 Ways to Avoid Baseball and Softball Injuries

With the start of spring, baseball and softball season are back in full swing. From little kids playing T-ball to adults visiting batting cages and playing in adult rec leagues, America’s favorite pastime is truly for people of all ages. But as with any sport, injuries can occur. With baseball and softball, these most commonly affect the arm and shoulder but can impact other parts of the body as well. If you’re stepping onto the pitch this season, here are some tips to keep in mind to stay healthy:

  1. Follow the safe pitching guidelines for your age group. There are guidelines put together by experts suggesting limits on how much you should pitch based on your age and experience. To avoid going over these limits, try not to pitch for more than one team, and avoid holding positions such as catcher on your non-throwing days.
  2. Avoid pitching when fatigued. When tired, you tend to alter your mechanics, which can lead to further injury. Take rest breaks when needed, including days off each week and a few months off from pitching each year.
  3. Wear appropriate protective gear when catching and helmets when at bat. After following these guidelines to protect yourself from overuse, you don’t want to get hurt by the ball itself. Proper gear can help protect you during games and practice.
  4. Call for the ball when catching to avoid collisions. Besides arm injuries, you also want to avoid concussions and bone or joint injuries that can occur with traumatic incidents. Do what you can to avoid aggressive contact with other players.
  5. Keep your arms healthy and strong. The thrower’s 10 is a great place to start in order to make sure your muscles can handle the demands of the sport. Whether you’re a serious athlete or just looking to have a good time after school or work, strength training can help keep you in the game.

Whether it’s your first season or your 50th, if pain is preventing you from getting up at bat, your local MOTION therapists can help get you moving again.
