Amputation Rehabilitation & Prosthetic Training

Amputation rehabilitation focuses on helping individuals regain mobility, independence, and confidence following limb loss. Recovery is both physical and functional, and physical therapy plays an essential role in supporting healing, strengthening the body, and adapting to new movement patterns.

At MOTION, our physical therapists work closely with patients throughout each phase of recovery, from early post-surgical healing through prosthetic training and return to daily activities. Whether you've experienced a below-knee, above-knee, or upper-extremity amputation, your plan of care is tailored to your specific needs, goals, and functional level. We focus on restoring strength, improving balance, and helping you safely return to daily activities.

What to Expect in Your Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation following amputation is individualized and progresses at a pace appropriate for your healing. Treatment may include:

  • Gentle range-of-motion exercises to maintain joint mobility
  • Strengthening exercises for the residual limb and surrounding muscles
  • Balance and stability training
  • Gait training, including prosthetic training when appropriate
  • Desensitization techniques to improve tolerance of the residual limb
  • Education on limb care, positioning, and safe mobility strategies

Supporting Functional Independence

Physical therapy after amputation focuses on helping you adapt safely and confidently to changes in mobility. Through guided strengthening, balance work, and movement retraining, therapy supports improved endurance, coordination, and functional independence. Your physical therapist will closely monitor your progress and adjust your program as your strength and comfort improve. Our goal is to help you return to meaningful daily activities and maximize mobility in a way that aligns with your personal goals and lifestyle.
