ASTYM® Therapy

(Augmented Soft Tissue Manipulation)

ASTYM® (Augmented Soft Tissue Manipulation) is an evidence-based soft tissue treatment designed to address pain, stiffness, and movement limitations caused by scar tissue, fibrosis, and degenerative conditions. By stimulating the body's natural healing response, ASTYM therapy stimulates the regeneration of healthy tissue and the resorption of problematic scar tissue that can restrict movement and contribute to pain.

At MOTION, our ASTYM-certified physical therapists use this evidence-based approach to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. Whether you're dealing with a chronic overuse injury, recovering from surgery, or managing soft tissue pain that hasn't responded to other treatments, ASTYM therapy may be an effective treatment for your personalized plan of care.

Conditions Treated with ASTYM Therapy

ASTYM therapy is used to treat both acute and chronic soft tissue conditions throughout the body, including:

  • Tendinopathies, such as Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, and lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • IT band syndrome
  • Hamstring, quadriceps, and calf strains
  • Rotator cuff dysfunction and shoulder pain
  • Post-surgical scarring and adhesions
  • Chronic joint stiffness and soft tissue restrictions
  • Scar tissue buildup following injury or surgery

What to Expect During ASTYM Treatment

ASTYM therapy is performed with specialized instruments applied to the skin's surface to locate and treat areas of scar tissue and soft-tissue dysfunction. Your physical therapist will systematically treat the affected region while also incorporating therapeutic exercises designed to guide the regeneration of healthy tissue. Treatment may include:

  • Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization along affected muscles, tendons, and connective tissue
  • Targeted stretching and strengthening exercises to support tissue remodeling
  • Activity modifications and guidance during recovery
  • Integration with other manual therapy or rehabilitation techniques as appropriate

ASTYM treatment is typically performed over a series of sessions, and many patients begin to notice improvements in pain and mobility within the first few weeks of care.

Supporting Lasting Recovery

ASTYM can help to address the root cause of soft tissue pain instead of merely managing symptoms. By promoting tissue regeneration and improving the quality of healing, treatment can lead to lasting improvements in flexibility, strength, and overall function. Your physical therapist will monitor your response to treatment and adjust your program accordingly. Whether you're returning to sport, work, or everyday activities, our goal is to help you move better and feel better for the long term.
