Dancer Rehabilitation
Dancing can put significant demands on the body due to repetitive movements that require flexibility, strength, and precise control. When injuries occur, they can affect not only performance but also mobility. Physical therapy for dancers focuses on addressing injuries while supporting the strength, stability, and technique needed to safely return to dance.
At MOTION, our physical therapists work with dancers of all levels, from recreational performers to pre-professional and professional artists. Treatment is tailored to the specific physical demands of dance, with careful attention to movement patterns, joint stability, and the mechanics required for different dance styles.
Common Dance-Related Injuries We Address
While this is not an exhaustive list, we commonly work with dancers who are experiencing:
- Ankle sprains and instability
- Tendon irritation in the foot or ankle
- Hip or knee pain related to repetitive movement
- Stress or overuse injuries
- Lower back pain associated with dance technique
What to Expect in Your Dance Injury Treatment
Your physical therapist will conduct a comprehensive assessment, which includes evaluating strength, flexibility, balance, and dance-specific mechanics. Treatment may include:
- Strengthening exercises to support joint stability and control
- Mobility and flexibility work to restore healthy movement patterns
- Balance and neuromuscular training to improve control during dynamic movement
- Technique-focused movement retraining when appropriate
- Guidance on modifying training during recovery
Supporting a Safe Return to Dance
Dance physical therapy focuses not only on healing the injury but also on preparing the body for the physical demands of returning to dance class, rehearsal, and/or performance. Throughout treatment, your physical therapist will monitor progress and gradually progress exercises and functional movements as your strength and control improve. Our goal is to help you return to dancing safely while reducing the risk of future injury.
MOTION serves dancers across Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, and New York, including the New York City metro area, where our physical therapists work with dancers from studios, companies, and performing arts programs throughout the region.
