The Schroth Method

The Schroth Method is a specialized physical therapy approach used to treat scoliosis, kyphosis, hyper-lordosis, and other postural spinal conditions. The Schroth Method uses individualized breathing techniques, postural re-education, and targeted exercises to address the three-dimensional nature of spinal curvatures. In today's world, increased time spent on phones, computers, and reading has contributed to a rise in forward head posture and rounded shoulders. If unaddressed, this can progress to the point of requiring surgical correction. For patients with scoliosis, early treatment can reduce the degree of curvature and, in many cases, help patients avoid the need for surgery altogether. The goal of treatment is to reduce the progression of spinal curvature, improve posture, reduce pain, and help patients develop a better understanding of long-term management

At MOTION, our Schroth-trained physical therapists provide this specialized program for patients of all ages, from adolescents with newly diagnosed scoliosis to adults managing long-standing spinal conditions.

Who Can Benefit

The Schroth Method is appropriate for a wide range of patients, including but not limited to:

  • Adolescents with scoliosis who are looking to slow curve progression and avoid the need for surgery, and ability to reduce curvature.
  • Adults managing scoliosis-related pain, postural changes, or functional limitations
  • Post-surgical scoliosis patients looking to optimize their recovery and long-term spinal health
  • Adolescents and adults with Scheuermann's disease, a condition in which three or more vertebrae develop a wedge-shaped deformity, leading to an exaggerated rounding of the upper back. With appropriate treatment, it is possible to reverse this wedging

What to Expect

Your therapist will begin with a thorough evaluation of your spinal curvature, breathing patterns, posture, and functional movement. Treatment is highly individualized, and your program may include:

  • Postural correction and spinal elongation exercises specific to your spinal curve
  • Rotational breathing techniques to address the rib cage and surrounding soft tissue
  • Muscle activation and strengthening exercises to support spinal stability
  • Education on posture management during daily activities
  • A home exercise program to reinforce progress between sessions
  • Coordination with your orthopedic physician or spine specialist as needed

Managing Scoliosis with Confidence

Scoliosis can feel overwhelming, but with the right guidance and a personalized exercise program, many patients are able to manage their condition effectively and maintain a high quality of life. The Schroth Method gives patients the tools to take an active role in their own care, building the strength and postural awareness needed for long-term spinal health. Our therapists at MOTION are here to guide you through every step of the process.
