Concussion ManagementPhysical Therapy for a Safe Recovery

A concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury that can affect balance, concentration, vision, sleep, and overall daily function. Concussions can result from sports injuries, car accidents, falls, or any impact to the head or body. Symptoms may appear immediately after injury or develop over time, and recovery looks different for everyone. Concussion physical therapy plays an important role in managing symptoms and safely guiding your return to daily activities, work, school, and sports.

At MOTION, our physical therapists work with patients of all ages following a concussion. Your physical therapist will take time to understand your symptoms, how they affect your routine, and what activities cause discomfort. You’ll receive a personalized concussion treatment plan of care designed to support your recovery while avoiding symptom flare-ups.

Common Concussion Symptoms We Address

Symptoms vary from person to person and may include:

  • Headaches [link to headaches page when live]
  • Dizziness or balance difficulties [link to balance/vestibular page]
  • Neck pain or stiffness
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Difficulty concentrating or feeling mentally foggy

What to Expect in Your Concussion Treatment

Your physical therapist will perform a comprehensive assessment that may include balance testing, neck mobility, visual tracking, and movement evaluation to identify areas contributing to your symptoms. Based on your evaluation, your concussion therapy plan may include:

  • Concussion rehab exercises to restore balance, coordination, and tolerance to activity
  • Cervical (neck) treatment to address stiffness or pain contributing to headaches
  • Vestibular and visual exercises to reduce dizziness and visual strain
  • Education on pacing activities, managing symptoms, and safely returning to daily routines
  • Gradual, guided progression back to work, school, or sport-specific activities

Throughout your concussion recovery, your physical therapist will monitor your response to treatment and adjust your program as you improve. Our goal is to help you recover safely through concussion physical therapy, rebuild confidence in movement, and return to your normal activities at a pace that supports long-term healing.

At MOTION, our concussion specialists proudly serve patients across Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, and New York.
