Trigger Point Dry Needling
Trigger point dry needling is a specialized technique performed by trained physical therapists that involves inserting a thin, monofilament needle into areas of muscle tightness and dysfunction, known as trigger points. By targeting trigger points directly, dry needling can help release muscle tension, reduce pain, and restore normal movement patterns.
At MOTION, dry needling is offered at our clinic locations outside of New York as part of a comprehensive, individualized plan of care. Our physical therapists who perform dry needling have completed advanced certification training and use this technique in combination with therapeutic exercise to support effective, lasting recovery.
Conditions That May Benefit from Dry Needling
Dry needling can be an effective treatment option for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including but not limited to:
- Neck pain and upper back tightness
- Low back pain and muscle spasm
- Shoulder pain and rotator cuff dysfunction
- Hip and gluteal pain
- Headaches and jaw pain related to muscle tension
- Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow
- Knee pain and IT band tightness
- Calf tightness and Achilles pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Chronic muscle tension and overuse injuries
- Sciatica/Lumbar radiculopathy
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
What to Expect
Your physical therapist will identify areas of muscle tightness and dysfunction through hands-on evaluation and assessment before performing dry needling. A thin needle is inserted directly into the trigger point, which may produce a brief involuntary muscle twitch. This twitch is a normal response that signals trigger point release. Treatment is generally well tolerated, and many patients notice a reduction in pain and improved mobility following their session. A few things to know before your first appointment:
- Sessions are typically brief and are performed as part of your broader physical therapy treatment
- Mild soreness in the treated area is common for a day or two following treatment and is a normal response
- Your therapist will discuss your comfort level and any concerns before proceeding with treatment
Targeted Relief for Muscle Pain and Dysfunction
For patients dealing with stubborn muscle pain, chronic tightness, or movement limitations that have been difficult to resolve, dry needling can be a highly effective addition to physical therapy. By addressing trigger points directly, dry needling helps release tension at the source, allowing the surrounding muscles to respond better to exercise.
