Return to Sports Rehabilitation

Recovering from an injury or surgery is only part of the journey back to sport. Returning to sport too soon or without the right preparation can significantly increase the risk of reinjury and set back your progress even further. Return to sport rehabilitation is a structured, progressive approach to restoring the strength, power, agility, and confidence an athlete needs to safely and fully return to competitive activity.

At MOTION, our physical therapists understand what it takes to get athletes back to the field, court, track, or gym, not just pain-free, but truly ready to compete. We use objective testing and sport-specific training to guide each phase of your return, ensuring that your body is prepared for the demands of your sport before you step back in.

Who Return to Sport Rehabilitation Is For

Return to sport rehabilitation is appropriate for athletes at any level who are working their way back from injury or surgery, including but not limited to:

  • Athletes recovering from ACL reconstruction or other knee ligament surgery
  • Individuals returning to sport following meniscus repair or cartilage procedures
  • Athletes recovering from shoulder instability surgery or rotator cuff repair
  • Those returning to activity following stress fractures or injuries
  • Athletes managing chronic overuse injuries that have limited or interrupted training
  • Individuals who have completed standard post-surgical rehabilitation but are not yet confident or fully prepared to return to sport
  • Youth, high school, collegiate, and recreational athletes returning from any injury

What to Expect

Return to sport rehabilitation is structured in progressive phases, with each stage building on the last. Our therapists utilize criteria-based progression to determine when athletes are ready to return to sport.  Your therapist will use functional testing and performance benchmarks to ensure your body is truly prepared at each step. Our goal is to give each athlete the knowledge of their injury, skills to train appropriately, and the confidence to stay out of the trainer's office and in the game. Your program may include:

  • Strength and functional testing to establish baseline readiness and guide progression
  • Sport-specific strengthening targeting the muscles and movement patterns most demanded by your sport
  • Plyometric and power training
  • Agility training
  • Neuromuscular control and movement quality retraining
  • Gradual reintroduction of sport-specific drills and activities
  • Ongoing communication with your surgeon, athletic trainer, or coaching staff, as appropriate

Ready to Return to Sport

The final goal of return to sport rehabilitation is getting you back performing at the level you were before your injury, with the strength, confidence, and movement quality to stay there. At MOTION, we take pride in supporting athletes through every phase of this process, from the early stages of post-surgical recovery through full return to sport. Whether you are working toward your first practice back or preparing for a return to high-level competition, our MOTION team is here to make sure you are ready.
