Splint Fabrication

Splinting is a specialized area of rehabilitation that involves the custom design and making of supportive devices to protect, position, and assist injured or post-surgical body areas, such as an arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, hand, and fingers. Unlike off-the-shelf braces, custom-made splints are molded directly to a patient's anatomy, ensuring a precise fit that maximizes comfort, protection, and therapeutic benefit. Splints may be used to immobilize a healing structure, correct positioning, reduce pain, or support function during recovery.

At MOTION, our therapists are trained in the fabrication of custom splints for a wide range of conditions. Whether you are recovering from surgery, managing a chronic condition, or healing from an acute injury, a custom splint can be an important part of your overall plan of care.

Conditions That May Require Splinting

Custom splint fabrication may be recommended for a variety of injuries, post-surgical needs, and chronic conditions, including:

  • Fractures of the hand, wrist, forearm, or elbow
  • Tendon injuries, including mallet finger, boutonniere deformity, and tendon repairs
  • Ligament sprains and joint instability of the hand, elbow, or wrist
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve compression conditions
  • Trigger finger and stenosing tenosynovitis
  • Arthritis affecting the elbow, hand, thumb, or wrist joints
  • Post-surgical protection following procedures
  • Burns or skin conditions requiring positional support
  • What to Expect During Splint Fabrication

Your therapist will begin with a thorough evaluation of your injury, surgical history, and functional needs before fabricating your splint. Our therapists are trained in splint assessment and design, ensuring the most appropriate type of splint is selected based on your specific diagnosis and needs. Low-temperature thermoplastic material is heated and molded directly to your hand, wrist, or arm, conforming precisely to your individual anatomy. The process is generally comfortable and completed in a single appointment. Your splint fabrication appointment may include:

  • Evaluation of the injured area, including range of motion, swelling, and skin integrity
  • Selection of appropriate splint design and materials based on your diagnosis and goals
  • Custom molding and fitting of your splint
  • Adjustments to ensure proper fit, comfort, and positioning
  • Education on splint wear schedule, care, and precautions
  • Guidance on exercises or activities to perform while in or out of the splint
  • Supporting Healing and Function

A well-fabricated splint does more than protect an injury; it plays an active role in guiding healing, maintaining proper alignment, and allowing you to participate in daily activities as safely as possible during recovery. Your therapist will monitor the fit and function of your splint over time and make adjustments as needed as your healing progresses. Custom splinting is often used alongside therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and other rehabilitation techniques to support a comprehensive recovery. Our goal is to ensure your splint fits well, serves its intended purpose, and supports your return to full function as efficiently as possible
